Rebel Article Features & Journalism

I realize that many of you are new to Rebel Grown, or Rebel Grown is new to you. So I’ve decided to go back in time a little bit.

Sometimes, when reminiscing of the past, your memory is all it takes to create a Time Machine and enjoy those special moments again. However, something I strive for is to stay as aware and conscious as possible, and to try to remain in the past present and future at all times. Tough task.

In the late 90s once I figured out how to use the Internet, I started messaging High Times on their website, asking them if I could be a journalist or even an intern. They never wrote back.I read Paradise Burning: Adventures of a High Times Journalist(1998), by Chris Simunek, a book detailing his experiences working for the cannabis-culture magazine. But I always wanted more. More details about the people involved growing and selling it, more stories of how the strains were created, or access to the realist people living what I could only dream about, being deeply ingrained in a life of the underground cannabis world.

I kept a good collection of weed magazines. High Times, Cannabis Culture, Skunk, and Heads. It eventually became sort of a library for friends who were into growing or wanted more information about herb. Back in the day my Grower friends could come to me with a topic and I would find a magazine that had an article addressing it. I would let them borrow the magazine, and most of the time they would bring it back, without late fees.

Years later as a grower in Humboldt I had an opportunity to work with some of the magazines. Grow Magazine and Skunk Magazine both featured articles that I wrote, and articles about me written by other people. The Ganjier also published articles I wrote on their initial website back in the day.

The work I did in 2010 was featured in High Times, although the Farm owner was the featured story. High Times has since covered awards that we’ve won and little features here in there.

I’ve decided to start sharing some of the articles I’ve written or been featured in on our website.

For each article we put up, we’ll release a limited batch of a new seed variety, and offer a special one-time discount on another.

We’re starting with this feature of the Breeder Diaries in Skunk Magazine from 2019. Click here to read the article.

I met the founder of Skunk Magazine in 2012. He has pretty much been canceled, so even though I never had a problem with him, we won’t get into it. The initial interview was done over the phone, and then he emailed me a list of questions. When he put the first draft together to share with me, it was 12 pages, which he said was way too long for the magazine, and suggested I write a book. It was edited down to 7 pages for print, but I still have the unreleased 12-page version, which is now live on our site. The only bummer is I really loved one of the photos that was only used in the 7-page print version, so I’m sharing it here.

Shortly after this was published, John told me he was stepping away from the magazine and asked if I would take over writing the Breeder Diaries for him. I wrote 4 additions of it, which I will re-release, and I hope to continue and keep it going, publishing with Skunk and on my own.

I really appreciated the depth of John’s questions. It showed he really took the time to personalize them, trying to get to know me well. I’ve tried to do the same as a journalist, when telling other people stories to give my best effort to understand who they are and share the details of their journey with cannabis in a way that’s fun and exciting.

I hope you read it and enjoy it, and feel free to leave a comment or feedback.

To go along with it, Rebel Sour, OG Sour Durban, and Double OG Chem (s1 vt cut) X (Cherry West bc4) f3 are 50% OFF until Feb 1st!

We are also releasing our Gaslight seed selections. I know people have been waiting for these.

Doc 15 x (Green Lantern x Double OG Chem)

True to its name, we call it Gaslight, cause you get so high you can’t tell what the truth is, so strong you’ll be questioning your own reality. Flavor has complex layers of gassy chem-forward Kush with pure fuel and sharp earthy pine undertones.

An exclusive, very rare hybrid of award-winning genetics from the Emerald Triangle's best farmers/breeders. Green Lantern, made famous when Ridgeline Farms (@ridgelinefarms) won 1st place at the Emerald Cup (in 2018), crossed twice with our most awarded and highly sought after Double OG Chem, via California state fair winning Double Lantern (Green Shock Farms), then crossed back into the only 3 x Breeders Cup winning Doc 15.

We are still offering BUY 2 GET 1 FREE for seeds, and look out for new clones dropping over the next several weeks.

We are trimming up our crop and have some exciting news about a drop in March. More info soon. The farm is so beautiful this time of year, and the neighborhood is beyond peaceful and quiet. @mountaintopsolutions has been taking this time to clean up and beautify the property, pruning fruit trees, cutting back brush, and fixing odds and ends with our irrigation system.

We’re excited to start planning out this year‘s crop. From what I understand, there are very few licensed farms left in Humboldt. From 10 to 15,000 to less than a few hundred, it’s been tragic and sad to see how things have unfolded over the last 10 years in such a sacred community for cannabis. We are proud to still be standing and hope to honor those who came before us. I could write a whole book about this farm, this neighborhood, this community, but we have a lot to talk about.

O H I O

At the end of the last newsletter, I said I would share how many dispensaries offer our weed in Ohio in this edition. The answer was 63, at this point more than a month late,r I would assume closer to 70.

We are currently offering our award-winning Double OG Chem and Double OG Sour, as well as Rebel Cookies, Island Mtn Headband, and Hill Rich organic flower statewide. Look out for our new live resin vape carts that just dropped at our favorite stores FRX, Queen City, Bloom, and Theory Wellness.

We are getting ready to drop our first batch of Island Mountain Headband, along with a fresh batch of Gaslight. We currently have 7 fire cuts in production, with much more coming. We are taking our time and doing things right. We have several new cuts going into production that I’ll be excited to talk about once we’ve named them. All are gas.

We also have new selections of two of my all-time favorites, Golden Grams and Natty Bumppo, and several others going through a test round, with our newest selections on deck behind that. Give us 9 months, and the best weed we’ve ever selected will be circulated statewide.

Our small state has a busy weed industry. Things are going smooth, aside from the fact that we need more trimmers. In our rural Northeast Kingdom region, it’s hard to find good help. I’m lucky to have a small but dedicated team cranking every day to make it happen.

We are moving through our crop at a good rate, and we’re able to get to market faster this year.

In VT, you can find all our staples. We just put our Vermont Strawberry Fields x Doc on our menu. A cross of Strawberry Fields, the mother of Strawberry Cough, with our Double OG Chem, it’s been one of our top sellers for the last several years. This year, we grew a bunch of it.

I spend a lot of my time handling all of our sales. I sell every gram by the 1/8 jar, 1g pre-roll, bulk pound, you name it. Hustle trees!!

We are selling through our small batch New York crop with a few select dispensary partners. Find Double OG Chem at Con-Bud in the Lower East Side. My partners in NY have been organic produce and cattle farmers for over 30 years. We have some island mountain headband and a few others on deck, until it’s sold out. Excited to plan out this year‘s crop.

This is always the most fun part. We are going through all the seeds we made last fall, organizing our selections and figuring out which ones are ready or appropriate for listing on our site or with other distribution partners, and what to start testing. We have a ton of stuff. It should be overwhelming, but we are used to it.

We’ve been smoking through jars of all our top selections from last year‘s R&D projects. We have some big winners that we are excited to get out there and into people's lungs, potential game changers if you ask me.

We are also getting ready to do another reversal on Double OG Chem, remaking some of our best feminized seeds, s1s, and creating new fem hybrids.

M U S I C
I have some exciting projects and big announcements coming soon. Stay tuned...

Much appreciation to anybody who has read this far. Your appreciation of our work and intention is our premier motivating factor. In a cannabis industry full of shortcuts and cutting corners, AI artwork and pay-to-play journalism, and just corny bad taste, I’m honored to get to be myself and keep it real and share my experiences, thoughts, and feelings.

Grateful & Stoked,

Dan from Rebel Grownå
