Mid spring (May) newsletter
Hi Everyone,
Welcome to our mid spring newsletter. I had meant to have one for spring equinox, and intended on having another for 4/20, but it wasn’t in the cards. I’ve been too busy keeping up with all the things going on to be able to find the time for creative writing.
It’s been a busy exciting and challenging time. With so many opportunities in development I have been navigating the best path forward, prioritizing the best use of my time creating new value, while properly maintaining and growing current operations.
In a perfect world I would have infinite space and labor to work on breeding and selections, and a decent budget for marketing and creative support, but I actually spend most of my time doing sales trying to sell enough weed to keep all this going.
So here’s what we’ve been up to.
Breeding, seed and clone drops, and sales specials:
Things are going great, and this is the most exciting and important part.
We continue to organize last years seed harvest while planning this years breeding/r&d projects.
We are currently making more feminized Double OG Chem and hybrids seeds, and testing through many of our new clone selections.
Murda-Baked OG, seeded
We have been steadily growing our direct to grower online seed and clone sales, thanks to you!
To thank you for your support we are offering 10% OFF all our seeds and clones on our websites throughout May with this code: MAY10
To go with this newsletter, we are releasing some new and old unique and exciting seeds.
We are bringing some special sativas back. And, one super gas hybrid combination.
Dropping these now @ 20% off!
Rebel Haze
(Super Silver Haze x (Sour Diesel x F13) x (Super Silver Haze x Sour Diesel) f4
Classic SSH from two unique influences dominate this cross. Some plants offer the classic metallic SSH flavor with 12 week sativa buds, others have an old Dutch Afghan Skunk influence with denser chunkier flowers finishing in 9 to 10 weeks. My favorite is a combination of the metallic SSH nose, with a sweet creaminess and slight gas background, and if you’re lucky, purple haze.
These are very vigorous. In 2015 in southern Trinity County we hit 17 pound plants with a 40 foot circumference in 800 gallons of soil, would’ve been 20+ pounds if it was blue dream.
Durban x Double OG Chem f2
An old Durban cut passed around New England for decades crossed into our classic Double OG Chem males. We grew over 100 last year to make these F2’s. I’m very happy with the flower. The flavors range from a sweet creaminess that I like to a cherry cough syrup with a hint of anise and terpinolene, but not too much of it, and a gas background. Some plants have gas dominant terps and big resin.
Some plants have long thin spears while others have chunky OG Chem structure, and combinations of both.
We also have clones from the F1 that we are offering on our site.
Double OG Sour #2 (cup winning cut) x (Island Mtn Headband f5)
We couldn’t drop a bunch of cool sativa‘s without having some gas. Nuff said on this one. You will find Sour louder and stronger than you remembered, with frostier chunkier buds and easier to grow plants. I’m not lying.
Clones
We have a bunch of stuff currently listed on the site.
Don’t forget to take advantage of our 10% off code all this month “MAY10”.
We offer several different price ranges. Classic and legacy collectors cuts, modern hype, and anything we didn’t breed for $99.99.
92 OG, BTY, Legend OG, Ghost OG, Sour Diesel, and Chem 91 are all available right now!
For Rebel Grown selections, we have different priced tiers from $200-$420, and occasionally put our most special stuff up for $1000 a cut, for things we do not want to get out. Our other highest priced stuff like Butterscotch #4 is $420 and worth the ticket.
If you’re looking for a recommendation for something cool and unique, our Durban x Double OG Chem #3 is screaming unique cherry cough syrup and land race Durban terps with a little gas in there.
Humboldt seed collection
I inherited this collection of seeds from a few of the elders in our neighborhood in Southern Humboldt.
This represents the work done in the 80’s and 90’s by some of the first homesteaders in the community, and was continued by a few others who were selectors and keepers of seed up until 2009.
It’s been in a chest freezer for over 16 years and just now was passed on to me. It’s a huge bag with a lot more stuff than you can see in the photo.
The first Humboldt pot I ever smoked came from these seeds, and I’m familiar with quite a few of them. This is the stuff that made Humboldt famous around the world in the 80s and 90s.
Can’t explain how blessed I feel and excited I am to get to work on preserving the legacy of the @paloverdeappellation. Give thanks and praises.
Below is a quote from my friend and former neighbor who passed the seeds to me.
“I know or hope you understand anyway that that represents a nearly priceless amount of work time, consideration and intellectual capital. Would love in future to have free access to your seed bank if it ever came up again (which honestly, I doubt). I hope you can do some good things with these. You’re about the only person I know who truly might understand the history behind all this and is actually in a position to carry it forward.”
R&d collab announcement
New concept I wanted to introduce here and to the discord group.
Join our discord https://discord.com/invite/HM8UFS2FVG
We are always trying to find ways to do more R&D and test through more of our genetics. More importantly, we are trying to find the best stand out winning plants that could be a real game changer for smokers in any market.
We currently have production for legal markets on my farms in Humboldt and Vermont, and with partners in Ohio, Arizona, and New York.
I’m working on getting things going in several other places this year as well as Canada, and possibly Jamaica for 2027.
Here is the idea I’d like to offer to our testers, or really anyone who purchases our seeds.
If you find a truly exceptional plant in our seeds, something so amazing that you think everybody should really try it, if you are able to clone or successfully re-veg it and share it with us (must test clean of viroid/pathogen).
We will then test it out. If it hits the mark and becomes commercially produced, you get to help us name the cut/variety and you will get 1% of its future net revenue in perpetuity anywhere it is grown and sold.
That means whether it’s cultivated in Humboldt or anywhere else Rebel Grown is grown and sold, or if we sell clones, next generation regular seeds made from it, or S1 seeds of it, you will receive 1% of everything it makes for life.
Happy Selecting!
Farms/States
Humboldt, California
Last May the couple who had been on the farm for 9 seasons moved on as they started a new family and had twins!
My longtime friend and passionate ganja Farmer Howard took over late into the spring and ran the farm as a one man operation.
He grew our genetics to the best of his abilities with minimal resources and pulled a beautiful but small crop.
I took my time to find the right buyers and representation for the crop.
We re-launched our flower into the California market in April to celebrate the grand opening of Solful‘s 4th retail location, in Petaluma, where they received one of 3 brick-and-mortar licenses in the community.
Solful is really the only retail chain in California that has established a customer base on supporting the smallest craft farmers in the Emerald Triangle, and paying them fairly for small batches of true craft herb. We are currently in all 4 of their locations featured as one of their top shelf flower offerings. https://solful.com
Also, big news! Jerry Garcia‘s family brand, Garcia‘s Hand-picked, run by his ex-wife and one of his daughters is re-launching into the California market, and has selected our flower to be a part of the re-launch. It will be available statewide and will highlight Rebel Grown and our award winning genetics. I have a long love and history for Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead, so this is a special thing to be a part of that are super grateful for.
We froze a small portion of our 2025 crop to partner with an award-winning hash company for R&D. Will keep you posted on small batch drops when they happen. The plan is to bring our hash back. We won some High Times cups for concentrates back in 2018, and we used to have more hash on dispensary menus than flower. Between 2017 and 2021 we were at one point and 120 stores in California, for hash.
I’ve got some other exciting partnerships starting for R&D and testing through more of our genetics, and getting them into smokers lungs, but I’ll save that info for another time.
With spring in full swing we have a collection of many of our most exciting genetics ready for propagation. We hired another grower, a previous employee who’s spent two seasons on our farm and left on good terms. He was missing the mountain and ready to come back to Sohum. We are ready for a great season with lots in our favor.
Vermont
We are locked in and ready for hopefully our best season yet. Since 2019 we have been rototilling our soil each year. This year I’m happy with the soil. Our cover crop is nicely established and the soil is soft. We will be amending over our established beds and doing minimal tilling and disruption.
I’m stoked about the diversity of high-quality organic inputs we’re using, from quality compost and alpaca manure, alfalfa meal, and really all of the things I’ve been putting into my soils and Humboldt for the last 15 years.
We are on point with the health of our mother stock and the timing of our production clones. We are hoping to grow the most and highest quality we’ve done yet on the Farm.
We’re well represented in the market but things are tight keeping up with overhead. We work with some really amazing retailers, and it seems our stuff is selling faster this year than the year before. I’m hopeful that one day I will find the right person to take over our sales. If we could add 5 to 10 more accounts in VT that be a little more consistent, it would be smooth sailing for this business and the Farm.
We are pretty much sold out of our Strawberry Fields cross, our DBL OG Sour has been our best seller and has been my favorite thing to roll up and smoke.
Vermont is also doing the majority of our breeding/seed production/r&d. We will start planting seeds for this year‘s breeding program on May 15 and another round on the 21st. Thinking about sharing some options and asking for folks opinions of what we should start this year. Look out for that on social media.
Ohio
Organic Double OG Sour flower by Rebel x Anthos
The team in OH has been excellent at adding SKUs. We currently have multiple sizes of flower, pre-rolls, infused pre-rolls, live resin, and single use live resin vape carts under Rebel Grown x Anthos Organics. They are even planning to create some chocolates or gummy’s for the brand.
We are currently in over 70 retailers, many of which are chains with multiple locations, so over 100 total.
We have several varieties currently in production and quite a few that will be in testing over the next 6 months. I hope to build a strong menu of varieties that can be top sellers in the market. I think we have a real opportunity to prove our genetics and become a top brand in the state.
More importantly, we have the right partners. Genuinely great hard-working people who love what they do and strive for always bring their best. Their effort towards quality control for our genetics is rare for decent sized indoor cultivators.
ARIZONA
Our licensing partners are vertically integrated. I have been working with their department heads on plans for the brand over the next 6 to 9 months.
We have 5 varieties in production being offered on deli menus at The Flower Shops 3 locations and wholesale to other brands and dispensaries. Our last batch of Peak OG hit 35% thc and over 4% terps!
AZ grown Peak OG
We have over a dozen new cultivars I’ve selected in testing. The goal is to find as many varieties as possible that check the boxes for production, QC, and marketability.
We will also be adding more products such as pre-rolls and solventless concentrates over the next six months.
NEW YORK
We sold through most of a small crop grown by our partners, Alchemy Pure. We saved the best for last, Double OG Chem and Double OG Sour which will hit the market in May and June in co-branded packaging.
We are planning out the 2026 grow season with them, supplying genetics for their brand, and also to package under Rebel Grown.
Our plan with them is to develop strategies for processing, sales, and distribution starting in November or December.
Our goal is to tread lightly while navigating and negotiating additional partnerships to give our brand good consistent representation in the market, and eventually have resources to have our own boots on the ground management in NY.
Federal Hemp Regulations
As you may know, this part of our business is possible do to our USDA federal hemp license. Because seeds and clones do not contain more than 0.3% THCA, they are federally compliant as a hemp product.
There is an amendment to the Farm bill that the Republicans passed this year that redefines these regulations and would make our seeds illegal to sell after November 2026.
I am hopeful there will be some additional amendments at the federal level, and those new laws will be pushed back several years allow allowing us to continue business as usual.
The loopholes in previous federal regulations allowed things like THC drinks to be sold at box stores like target and at gas stations all around the country. If the new laws go into effect it will cost over 400,000 jobs, and many large companies have invested heavily into the space. Many experts agree it seems likely these new regulations will be pushed back to prevent that from happening.
Federal Rescheduling
You may have heard that the federal government has rescheduled cannabis from a schedule 1 to a schedule 3 drug.
While there is a lot of information we don’t know yet, here is what we do know.
The federal government finally recognizes cannabis has medicinal value.
This will open the door to scientific research for cannabis as medicine for pharmaceutical companies and universities.
It will eliminate the 280 E tax laws, and medicinal cannabis companies will be able to write off cost of good sold and file taxes the same as any other business.
It legitimizes state licensed medical cannabis operators on a federal level, which will open up access to finance that had previously been restricted due to the liability of being federally illegal, and possibly interstate and global commerce.
What it doesn’t do:
Let people incarcerated for cannabis crimes out of state and federal prisons and jails.
Legalize cannabis or create federal regulations.
Who benefits:
Large corporate conglomerates and multi state operators. They will potentially save tens of millions on federal taxes that they can re-deploy into growing the value and revenue of their companies and assets.
Pharmaceutical companies and universities interested in researching cannabis as medicine and creating new products.
